Bayern Munich – Schalke 04

It’s time for the German Bundesliga to start again. On Friday we will see the champion Bayern Munich hosting Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena. We believe this is a great game for an opener, so let’s take a look.

What can we say about Bayern Munich’s success in the previous season? The Bavarians won the treble for a second time in their history and it was an amazing season for the club. It didn’t start too well with the sacking of Niko Kovac, but his replacement Hansi Flick proved to be the right man for the job. Flick brought an impressive confidence in the team and we saw the fruits of his work.

Bayern Munich didn’t do much on the transfer market, but they made a really marquee signing. This is the German international Leroy Sane who arrives at the Allianz Arena from Manchester City. Sane will replace the Croatian winger Ivan Perisic who is going back to Inter Milan after his loan spell ended.

At this moment it’s still not clear what will happen with the midfielder Thiago Alcantara. He’s linked to a possible move to Liverpool, but so far nothing is happening in this regard.

The American manager David Wagner starts his second season at Schalke 04. During the 2019/20 campaign the Royal Blues finished 12th in the standings, so clearly they would like to do much better now. Schalke are not in their best situation right now, but the club has enough potential to enter the Top 10 at least.

On the market Schalke 04 offered a contract to the 36-years old striker Vedad Ibisevic, while the club also loaned Eintracht Frankfurt’s forward Goncalo Paciencia. Some of the young players from the B team were promoted to the first team as well.

Bayern Munich are the huge favourites against Schalke 04 and this is not a surprise by any means. The Bavarians are probably the number one team in the world right now. Let’s see if they are going to prove it.
