Serie A

Can anyone stop Juventus from winning another title in the Serie A? That’s the big question before the Italian league starts again. The Old Lady looks like a huge favourite to win the Calcio again, but clubs like Napoli, Inter, Mian and Roma will give their best to stop them. But can they?

This summer provided a big change for Juventus. Massimiliano Allegri left he club after a very successful spell, being replaced by Maurizio Sarri. After winning Europa League with Chelsea, Sarri took the decision to return to Italy and replace Allegri. Maybe this will lead to some changes in the way the team plays, but we shall wait and see.

On the summer market Juve made a very important signing. The Old Lady signed one of Europe’s best young defenders Matthijs de Ligt, who was bought from Ajax for more than 80 million euro. If everything goes well, De Ligt shall become one of Juventus’ most important players in future. Meanwhile the club also signed Manchester City’s Danilo, Genoa’s Cristian Romero, Roma’s Luca Pellegrini and Sassuolo’s Merih Demiral. Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot joined as free agents, while the legendary Gianluigi Buffon returned to Turin after one season spell in PSG.

Joao Cancelo, Leonardo Spinazzola, Moise Kean and Stefano Sturaro left the club, looking for new challenges. The future of Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain remains unclear as all three of them are linked to transfers in other clubs.

Carlo Ancelotti will lead Napoli for a second season in a row. Last season he took his team to the second place in the Serie A, so now his team will try to at least keep this position. On the summer market Napoli made a pretty strong move, signing Roma’s centre back Kostas Manolas. Meanwhile the club also bought Fenerbahce’s young talent Eljif Elmas, while Empoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo also signed. Meanwhile the experienced central defender Raul Albiol returned to Spain, while Amadou Diawara, Carlos Vinicius and Roberto Inglese also left.

There’s a huge excitement among Inter Milan’s fans, because the multiple Serie A winner Antonio Conte returned to Italy to sign with the Nerazzurri. Inter are looking for their first Serie A title since 2010 and everyone hopes that Conte is going to be the man who will bring the glory back to San Siro. At least no nobody can doubt that he knows how to win trophies.

On the market Inter made a very strong move, signing the Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United. There are rumours that Mauro Icardi will leave the club until the end of the month, so Lukaku should turn into a new leader to Inter’s attack. Meanwhile the club also signed Hertha’s midfielder Valentino Lazaro and Sassuolo’s winger Matteo Politano. Genoa’s Ionut Radu, Parma’s Gabriel Brazao and Sochaux’s Lucien Agoume were also signed, while Cagliari’s Nicolo Barella and Sassuolo’s Stefano Sensi were loaned. Of course, we can’t forget about Uruguayan veteran Diego Godin, who moved to San Siro and shall become the new leader of Inter’s defense. Meanwhile the Nerazzurri said goodbye to Ivan Perisic, who chose to sign with Bayern Munich.

Just like Inter, their local rivals Milan will start the season with a new manager. This is Marco Giampaolo, who arrived from Sampdoria. He did some good things in Genova, but let’s see how he will do in Milan.

On the market Milan spent some money for new players, too. The club’s record signing for the summer is the Brazilian striker Rafael Leao, who arrived from Lille. He’s just 20-years old, so there are high hopes about his future. Meanwhile the club also signed Atalanta’s Franck Kessie, Real Madrid’s Theo Hernandez, Empoli’s Ismael Bennacer, Flamengo’s Leo Duarte and Empoli’s Rade Krunic. All of these players are pretty young, so Milan are clearly thinking about the future. Meanwhile Patrick Cutrone, Manuel Locatelli and Christian Zapata left the club.

Roma are just another one of the Serie A giants who start the season with a new head coach. This is the Portuguese tactician Paulo Fonseca, who arrives from the Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk. He will has the task to make the Wolves a solid contender in the Calcio again.

What Roma did on the market? The club spent almost 30 million euro for Juventus’ left back Leonardo Spinazzola, while some serious money were also paid to Real Betis for the goalkeeper Pau Lopez. Napoli’s Amadou Diawara and Atalanta’s Bryan Cristante also moved to the Olimpico. In the same time we can say that Roma are going to miss the Greek centre back Kostas Manolas, who chose to move to Napoli. The left back Luca Pellegrini was sold to Juventus, while Stephan El Shaarawy will continue his career in China. Of course, we shall mention that the club icon Daniele De Rossi left the capital and moved to Boca Juniors.

Despite of finishing 8th in the Serie A last season, which was really dissapointing, Simone Inzaghi was gifted another chance to manage Lazio. Now he has to think about what went wrong last season, because the goal is to do much better than that.

On the market Lazio signed the midfielder Manuel Lazzari from SPAL, while the centre back Denis Vavro was bought from Kobenhavn. Braga’s winger Pedro Neto and the midfielder Bruno Jordao was signed from the Portuguese club, but they were sold immediately to Wolverhampton Wanderers, while the Spanish winger Jony was signed from Malaga. The midfielder Milan Badelj and the centre back Martin Caceres left the club.

That’s what happened during the summer with the biggest clubs in the Italian Serie A at the moment. Despite of Napoli’s strenght and the new projects which are starting at Inter, Milan and Roma, Juventus remain the biggest favourite for the title. Cristiano Ronaldo continues to score a lot of goals, while Matthijs de Ligt should improve the Bianconeri’s defense. Juventus are usually winning the league without much of a competition. Will it be the same now? Only time will tell, just as always.
